15.10.2007

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Neeme Jarvi has extended his contract as music director of the New Jersey Symphony through 2009.

The contract, which began in 2005, was to expire at the end of next season.

"I love making music with the wonderful musicians of the NJSO," the 70-year-old conductor said in a statement announcing the extension. "I am excited about our upcoming concerts, and I look forward to bringing great music to New Jersey audiences."

He said he also hoped "to contribute to the orchestra's artistic growth beyond 2009."

Born in Estonia, Jarvi emigrated to the United States in 1980. In 1982, he became principal conductor of Sweden's Gothenburg Symphony. He was music director of the Detroit Symphony from 1990 until 2005, and remains its music director emeritus.
