Federal News Radio_Looking Ahead: Advice for the Next Administration (January 31)

As the Bush administration comes to a close, many are looking ahead to the challenges facing the next administration.
One of them is Dr. Andrew Krepinevich, Executive Director of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. He and his organization have been working on a strategy for the next administration to deal with security issues and he talked about this on Wednesday's Daily Debrief with host Amy Morris.
Krepinevich noted the example of Estonia, which was attacked last year via the Internet.
"[Estonia] is quite a wired society. [It was] subjected to a barrage of cyber attacks -- to the point where their defense minister said, 'We have been, in effect, subjected to a cyber blockade,' much as a navy would come and blockade your ports. . . . So much of our commerce and our finance depends upon the ability to remain connected. And then you look . . . with regard to the growing need of our military to remain connected -- or what the Pentagon calls 'networked forces' -- and, of course, cyber attacks could fray and break apart the elements of that network and really degrade the effectiveness of our military -- the ability to deter aggression, for example. So this is an area that, I think, hasn't received a lot of attention but certainly is getting more and more attention in the Pentagon.
