SAN JOSE -
San Jose on Friday hosted the leader of Estonia, who visited City Hall to celebrate the recent establishment of an economic development office in the city.
"We'd like to operate more with companies located here in Silicon Valley," said Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip during a stop at the San Jose City Hall Rotunda, where he was greeted by Mayor Chuck Reed and several council members.
The Republic of Estonia, a former Soviet bloc nation of 1.3 million along the Baltic Sea near Finland, has developed as a hub of electronics and telecommunications business. Skype, now part of eBay, was designed by Estonian developers.
The country's economic development agency, Enterprise Estonia, established a San Jose office in August. Mayor Chuck Reed has been looking for ways to foster such economic partnerships abroad as part of a refocusing of San Jose's international and Sister Cities programs.
