TALLINN, Sep 17, BNS - The Estonian embassy in Stockholm serves as the NATO contact embassy in Sweden starting from last year.
The system of NATO contact embassies was created back in 1992 to support the work of the North Atlantic Partnership Council. The network of contact embassies is one of the channels through which the policy of NATO is presented in the alliance's partner countries.
The task of the contact embassy during the two years that it performs that role is to intermediate information between NATO and the host country of the embassy.
In the event of high-level NATO visits the contact embassy usually provides the venue where the visiting NATO representative offers representatives from alliance member states an overview of the meetings and negotiations that took place in the host country.
The contact embassy also provides overviews of the host country's security policy and related developments.
The alliance has contact embassies in 35 countries.
In the years 2005-2007 the Estonian embassy in Helsinki was the NATO contact embassy in Finland.
