24.04.2008

TALLINN, Apr 24, BNS - At least 500 participants, including at least 71 ministers, are expected to the World Health Organization's (WHO) ministerial conference to take place in the Estonian capital at the end of June.

Giving an overview of the preparations to the government on Thursday, Social Affairs Minister Maret Maripuu said at the government's press conference that 53 health ministers and 18 finance ministers were expected to the conference.

Maripuu said that the conference would pass the WHO Tallinn Charter on world health.

The WHO European regional ministrial conference from 25 to 27 June in Tallinn on Health Systems, Health and Wealth will be one of the highest level conferences ever to have taken place in Tallinn.

As the presence of a large number of ministers presumes increased security measures, the government is planning temporary restoration of border controls with other EU countries, which were lifted when Estonia joined the Schengen Treaty at the end of last year.

Maripuu said that the decision concerning the security measures in connection with the conference would be taken in mid-May.
