Estonia's Broadcasting Council endorses launch of ETV2

16.04.2008

TALLINN, Apr 16, BNS - The National Broadcasting Council, which acts as the supervisory board of Estonia's public broadcaster, decided on Tuesday that the second channel of the public ETV television must go on the air in August and stay open until the end of the year.

The test channel will be on the air up to six hours per day and up to 40 hours per week, the National Broadcasting Company said.

The program of ETV2 will be transmitted digitally and will be geared to viewers interested in culture.

During the Beijing Olympics the test channel will help the main channel of ETV cover the Olympic events.

The National Broadcasting Company said that it is not able to satisfy the interest of viewers and offer a sufficient amount of programs directed to smaller viewer groups working with just one channel, as the program meant for the wide public takes most of air time.

During the Olympic Games in August it will be possible to use the channel for testing new technologies.

Launching the channel with a full program requires additional money from the 2009 state budget.
