Estonian president appoints Sirel as Estonian army chief

TALLINN, Apr 09, BNS - Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves Wednesday in Kadriorg signed a decision on appointing Col. Indrek Sirel for commander of the Army.
According to the Constitution and the Peacetime State Defense Act the president appoints and dismisses at the proposal of the defense forces commander the defense forces command, that is chiefs of the general staff, the Defense League and of the armed services.
Col. Sirel is Army chief of staff and acting commander since October 2006.
Sirel, 38, is a graduate of a Russian war college in Moscow and has completed a general staff course in the United States and a special course for senior officers in Finland.
He has since 1993 served in various positions with the Kalev and Viru infantry battalions, the General Staff, as staff officer with the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, and as chief of the Scouts Battalion.
President Toomas Hendrik Ilves promoted Sirel to colonel this February.
Col. Sirel has been decorated with the Class Four service badge of the Eagle Cross, the defense forces service badge, the defense forces special services cross, the Army Officer Gold Cross, the Defense Ministry Gold Breast Pin, the Tenth Anniversary of Restored Defense Forces memorial medal and the NATO Peacekeeping Operations medal.
