04.04.2008

TALLINN, Apr 04, BNS - The president of the United Nations' General Assembly, Srgjan Kerim, during a meeting with visiting Estonian MPs on Thursday called on the country to continue its work to promote the opportunities offered by information technology in countries where this is needed.

The president of the UN 62nd General Assembly and members of the Estonian parliament's foreign affairs committee exchanged thoughts on topics that stand high on the United Nations' agenda, such as climate change, fulfilling of the Millennium Development Goals, fight against HIV and AIDS, and reform of the UN.

Kerim spoke about a high-level conference on HIV and AIDS to be held on the initiative of the UN in early June, preparations for which are led jointly by the head of the Estonian representation to the UN, Tiina Intelmann, and the envoy of Botswana.

"Estonia, too, bears responsibility to the fulfilment of the millennium goals and for Estonia one of the target countries in development cooperation, aside from the traditional target countries Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova, is Afghanistan," the chairman of the Estonian parliament's foreign affairs committee, Sven Mikser, said.

Catherine Bragg, chief of the bureau for the coordination of humanitarian aid at the UN, offered the Estonian MPs an overview of the bureau's activities.

Bragg thanked Estonia for consistent voluntary contributions to the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund and said Estonia served as an example for other countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
