Estonia accedes to several countries' letter to NATO secretary-general

19.03.2008

TALLINN, Mar 20, BNS - Together with several other countries Estonia sent a letter to NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, supporting giving the NATO membership action plan (MAP) to Georgia and Ukraine.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tiina Maiberg told BNS that already before Estonia had wanted to give MAP to the two countries at the NATO summit in Bucharest in April.

So Foreign Minister Urmas Paet confirmed this at a meeting of the New Friends of Georgia meeting in March, adding that the membership action plan was a good opportunity to support new democracies sharing the same values with us.

The letter was also signed by Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Canada, a founding member of the alliance.

According to the letter such a decision would help increase stability and security in Europe and refraining from it would place in doubt NATO's traditional open doors policy.

Giving MAP to Georgia and Ukraine has created differences in NATO -- Germany and France, for example, have not supported it.
