Seven Estonian experts to take part in EU's Kosovo mission

15.03.2008

TALLINN, Mar 15, BNS - Seven experts from Estonia are about to participate in the European Union's police and justice mission in Kosovo.

Seven members have been chosen for the Estonian team in the 2,000-strong mission approved by the European Union in February that will advise Kosovo on matters related to the work of the police, border guard, and taxation and customs, spokespeople for the Estonian Foreign Ministry said.

The mission for the experts lasts one year.

Two of the Estonian experts come from the police, two from the border guard, two from the tax and customs authority and one from the prosecutor's office.

The Estonians will go to Kosovo at different times, with the first experts to depart in April and the last ones in summer.

Following the declaration of independence by Kosovo the EU will after the end of a 120-day transition period take over from the current UN mission tasks related to police, judicial and civilian administration.

The EU-appointed civilian administrator for Kosovo, Pieter Feith of the Netherlands, is expected to take over from the chief of the UN mission Joachim Ruecker in June.
