Next census probably to be taken in Estonia in 2011

06.03.2008

TALLINN, Mar 06, BNS - The government is due at its Cabinet session later on Thursday to discuss a plan to hold the next population census in Estonia in 2011.

Spokespeople for the government said that on the basis of EU law and international practice, and considering that the last census was held in Estonia in 2000, the next census must take place in 2011.

Censuses have been taken in Estonia in 1881, 1897, 1922, 1934, 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989 and 2000.

The usual practice is that a census would be taken every ten years.

The United Nations and the EU have launched a program to have censuses taken in all countries simultaneously and are recommending the year 2011 for the next census.

According to the proposal to be handled by the Cabinet, a survey of agricultural holdings would be held simultaneously with the population census.
