Study: Estonia ranks third in the world by success of transformation

TALLINN, Feb 18, BNS - Estonia ranks third in the world after the Czech Republic and Slovenia according to the Bertelsmann Transfarmation Index.

Germany's Bertelsmann Fund studied the success of 125 countries on the basis of the BTI index of transition to democracy and market economy.

According to the Bertelsmann index the top ten transition countries are the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Estonia, Taiwan, Hungary, Lithuania, Chile, Uruguay and South Korea.

Latvia's ranking in the list is 13, Bulgaria's 15, Romania's, 17, Turkey's 32, Georgia's 38 and Russia's 59.

Last year Estonia ranked second in the BTI list, and was 7th in 2007 and first in 2004.

Among other things the index takes into consideration criteria such as effective use of resources, purposefulness of reforms, consensus with other political forces, stability of democratic institutions, functioning of market economy and competition, stability of the currency and social insurance.

The bottom ten countries of the list were Iraq, Chad, Ivory Coast, Afghanistan, Democractic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, North Korea, Eritrea, Burma and Somalia.

The Bertelsmann Fund was established by Reinhard Mohn, former head of the German media group Bertelsmann AG of more than 80,000 employees.
