NATO military geographers meeting in Estonian capital

19.02.2008

TALLINN, Feb 19, BNS - A military geography conference of NATO held for the first time in Estonia is dedicated to geographic aspects of the alliance's ongoing operations.

The two-day conference that began in Tallinn on Tuesday is discussing military geography of NATO's current operations, staffing of the alliance's rapid response forecs and geographic support, military spokespeople here said.

"Military geographers need to start charting operation areas considerably before the units' arrival in the area. Charting operation areas is at the same time such an extensive task that it can be accomplished only in cooperation with allies," the head of the defense forces' military geography group, Capt. Andris Sprivul, said.

According to Sprivul, the group can support NATO with digital spatial databases and paper maps.

The Tallinn conference is attended by experts from 18 NATO member states as well as representatives of forces' headquarters and operations. The event is organized by the Estonian defense forces' military geography group together with the Allied Joint Force Command Headquarters Naples.

NATO military geographers are meeting for the first time in Estonia. In 2005 Estonia hosted a military geography conference of the Baltic states.
