Plaque to commemorate Estonian soldiers killed in Afghanistan unveiled at Tapa

20.02.2008

TALLINN, Feb 20, BNS - A plaque to commemorate two Estonian soldiers killed in Afghanistan last summer has been unveiled at the Tapa training center, a regional newspaper reports.

The chief of the training center, Col. Urmas Roosimagi, unveiled on Tuesday the plaque dedicated to members of the Laane-Viru garrison who lost their lives in the overseas mission.

"May this be a tribute to and in remembrance of all who fall in foreign missions," the chaplain of the training center, Silvester Jurjo, told the troops attending the ceremony and the families of the killed soldiers, Sgt. Kalle Torn and Jr. Sgt. Jako Karuks.

"Thanks to this (plaque) we're going to remember those boys forever," said Roosimagi, adding that he believes that a person lives as long as the memory of him is alive.

Of the personnel of the Tapa training center, more than 10 are serving on a foreign mission every day. The unit has to date lost two of its members while nine have been wounded.

Torn and Karuks were killed in the NATO-led mission on June 23, 2007. The Estonian ordnance disposal team of which they were members was attacked with a 107 mm rocket during their lunch break in the Sangin Valley in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province.
