New Estonian unit to fly to Kosovo

12.02.2008

TALLINN, Feb 12, BNS - A 26-strong Estonian reconnaissance unit, ESTRIF-3, is scheduled to depart for Kosovo early on Wednesday morning.

The unit will be tasked with conducting reconnaissance patrols and searches, as well as ensuring the security of various sites, military spokespeople in Tallinn said.

Like its predecessor, the unit is made up of members of the Kaitseliit (Defense League) volunteer corps, and just like ESTRIF-2 it will be deployed in Mitrovica, northern Kosovo, as part of a Danish battalion.

Before embarking on the mission the unit went through six months of training at the Peace Operations Center in Paldiski and spent two weeks in Denmark training under Danish instructors.

Estonian defense forces personnel have been taking part in the NATO-led peacekeeping operation in Kosovo since late 1999.
