The hotINK International Play Reading Festival, presented by the Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama will present the drama by a Finnish author with the Estonian heritage, Sofi Oksanen, “PURGE”, translated by Eva Buchwald and directed by Sharon Fogarty.
Place and location: January 24th at 7:00 pm at the Tisch School of the Arts 721 Broadway at Waverly, New York

Purge opens a window on a remote area of newly independent Estonia in 1992. Aliide, who lives alone in a farm house on the Finnish-Estonian border, discovers a young woman named Zara in her yard. Through the two characters, Oksanen deals with the horrors experienced by the women of Soviet Estonia. The essence of the story is women’s resistance, and the blurring of good and evil that is its consequence.
The reading will feature distingushed actress Ruth Maleczech, and will be followed by a conversation with the translator, moderated by Hana Worthen.
“Purge” will be published and presented in English at the end of April in New York; Sofi Oksanen is coming to the United States for this occasion. The book has won the prestigious Finlandia literature prize and it has been a bestseller in Finland and Estonia. Sofi Oksanen has named as a Person of the Year 2009 by the biggest daily newspaper Postimees in Estonia.
